Valentines Day Hamper Gifts!

Monday 8th of November 2010

There are many differences of opinions regarding the origin of St valentine's Day. The name Valentine was given to numerous Christian martyrs or saints including Valentine Rome and Valentine Terni. Valentine of Rome was a priest and martyred around AD 269, and Valentine Terni was a bishop in Interamna and martyred in AD 197.

It is commonly accepted that Valentine Rome was buried on February 14th and that since his death he has been honoured annually ever since. Some believe that the day was given to honour both saints and possibly a third one in Africa. Although there weren't any romantic elements for the day, there is a belief that a farewell note to a friend read “From your valentine”, written just before Valentine Rome's death.

Romance entered the remembrance in the 14th century and honoured a St Valentine but when the Roman Catholic Calendar of Saints was revised in 1969 St Valentine's day was removed because very little is known about the saint including whether the day was given to just the one saint or several. Although some countries still honour the day with feasting, many countries simply honour the day with sending cards of love and gifts.
